Seven accessories for a warm home this winter

When winter arrives, all we want to do is wrap ourselves in a cozy blanket and enjoy a hot drink. But if that’s not enough for you, you can create a cosy winter decor for your home by adding a few well-chosen accessories. They’ll help you feel warm even when you’re not wrapped up in a blanket! Discover our seven favorite accessories for a warm and cozy winter below.

Blankets and cushions

The first accessories we recommend are blankets… lots and lots of blankets! There are many different types, but our favorites are thick wool blankets, ideally in bright colors. Warmer hues will add even more coziness to your decor. Dark oranges and mustard yellows will help create a relaxing fireside ambience and make you feel even cozier and warmer! If you’re planning an open house, know that a strategically placed blanket can make all the difference in creating the perfect backdrop for a cozy, warm home.

Take some cushions and place them all over the furniture in your home. If you can find hairy or velvety cushions, stock up in every color! Fluffy cushions are perfect for relaxing and unwinding to the full: just make sure the colors you choose match your blankets.

Natural decorations

Since the cold is probably keeping you indoors, let the outside come to you through your home’s décor. Items from nature, such as pieces of wood or plants, will help you do this. You can stack a few logs in a corner or decorate the shelves with pine branches. The room’s energy will be infused with the tranquility of nature, and you’ll spend a cozy winter at home! You can also use other natural materials such as leather, metal or linen to add texture to your interior… and an even warmer touch!

You can also use flowers. Choose a few smaller vases, place seasonal flowers in them and arrange them in a few key places around the house so that you can feel all the charm of winter from one room to the next. Artificial flowers are perfect for this – they’re maintenance-free, and don’t suffer from the lack of light during the cold season or the effects of home heating. If possible, use varieties that would normally bloom outdoors to keep your décor as natural as possible. Dark red hellebores or galanthus (snowdrops) are an excellent choice. Artificial flowers in dark red or white, on the other hand, instantly evoke winter.

Home

A fireplace is a luxury that not everyone can afford. A crackling fire is perfect for sitting back and relaxing. Installing a fireplace can also be a great way to prepare your home for winter. Can’t have a real fireplace in the house? Treat yourself to a digital fireplace: they really do look like real fireplaces, and some even imitate the sound of a real wood fire. Rearrange the furniture around your real or virtual fire, and enjoy!

If you want to have a real fireplace installed, you may have to move. Houses in some big cities, like Toronto and the surrounding area, for example, don’t have fireplaces. But in the Montreal area, where there are more single-family homes than apartments, fireplaces are more common. If you choose to move to Montreal from Toronto, make sure it’s the right thing to do before you go ahead. Moving to another city is quite a challenge, and one that you’ll handle much better by dealing with professionals. Hiring a moving company will speed up the process and greatly reduce all the work you’ll have to do. A good mover will keep all your belongings intact and have solutions to any problems that may arise during the process.

Scented candles

The apple and cinnamon scented candles are an instant reminder of the festive season, and will make your home even more welcoming this winter. These two fragrances help create a cozy atmosphere. You can also choose classic winter bouquets, or combine and create interesting combinations. If you have an open house, you can use certain aromas that will add to your setting. A pleasant fragrance in the house is one of the elements that will make the buyer subconsciously decide to buy your home.

Gold-plated accessories

Gold is slightly different from the rest of these accessories, but it will add a touch of opulence to a warm décor. If you have frames or mirrors with gold outlines, place them around the house. If you don’t, you can use decorative items you no longer use, and give them a second life with gold spray paint. You can also add bronze or brown accents to your freshly repainted items to give them more depth. Just be sure to read the labels on the paint containers you use: these products are not always suitable for all types of surface.

Lamps

During winter, the days are shorter and you need to add light to your home. With a few lamps, you’ll open up the space and stay more awake and focused… especially when it’s dark at 4 p.m. in the afternoon. Lighting is the quickest and easiest way to create a warm atmosphere in winter. Proper lighting will create a natural, welcoming environment. But before you start placing lamps anywhere in the house, check where the darkest spots are to make good choices.

Carpets

Hardwood and floating floors are an attractive choice, but they can be cold on the feet in winter; the same goes for ceramic. You’ll feel instantly warmer – and so will the ambience! – with a rug. One of the advantages of living in a small apartment is that you can cover the whole place with rugs to delimit spaces! There isn’t a corner of the house that a rug can’t embellish. Rugs can also be used in the bathroom or kitchen, so go ahead and decorate your new home with style!

In conclusion

There are lots of accessories to make your home warmer in winter, but these seven are our favorites. If you see something you like – don’t be afraid to try it! Each of these choices will greatly enhance your decor and make it more inviting, and that’s what counts when you have guests over. These small, well-chosen additions are also sure to help you have a more relaxing winter… and one that won’t seem so long.
